I couldn't figure out what to do after the first tutorial fight. This game is somehow confusing even after over 18 years

Omg when i was kid i remember i played this game with ps1 cd on ps2. And i remeber the start of the game cause i played it so many times. The reason is that i couldn’t save the game on the memory card because that was a ps1 game. My mom saying: “turn off the playstation!!!!” And everytime i had to start a new game.
